Job Summary:

The Traffic Signal Technician is responsible for the installation, maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting of traffic signal systems to ensure safe and efficient traffic flow. This role involves working with various electrical and electronic components, conducting inspections, and collaborating with engineering teams to implement system upgrades and improvements. This position is bonus eligible.

Responsibilities:

Installation and Maintenance:

  • Install, maintain, and repair traffic signal systems including traffic lights, pedestrian signals, and associated infrastructure.
  • Must understand traffic signal phasing, loop detection, various camera detection systems, pedestrian pushbuttons, radio and fiber communications as well as terminating in controller cabinet and the field.
  • Must be able to communicate with other traffic signal agencies (VDOT, various cities and counties) and vendors as needed.

Troubleshooting:

  • Identify and troubleshoot issues with traffic signal equipment, including electrical malfunctions, signal timing problems, and communication failures.
  • Must be able to troubleshoot TS-1, TS-2 and ATC cabinets, terminate and program flashing yellows when required. Assist with installation of cabinets and signal appurtenances that are used in today’s ever evolving traffic signal industry.
  • Must be able to troubleshoot lighting systems and work with tech support on implementation of various controlled type lighting systems.

Inspections:

  • Conduct routine inspections of traffic signal equipment to ensure proper functioning and compliance with regulations and standards.

Programming:

  • Program and adjust traffic signal timing to optimize traffic flow and minimize congestion, considering factors such as traffic volume, pedestrian activity, and time of day.

Documentation:

  • Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, inspections, and repairs performed on traffic signal systems.

Collaboration:

  • Coordinate with engineering teams and other stakeholders to implement system upgrades, new installations, and modifications to existing traffic signal infrastructure.

Emergency Response:

  • Respond to emergency situations such as power outages, emergency signal repair, or severe weather events to restore traffic signal functionality and ensure public safety.
  • Must be able to travel (overnights as needed) when required and handle after-hours service calls on intersections when needed.

Safety Compliance:

  • Adhere to safety protocols and regulations while working on traffic signal systems, including proper handling of electrical equipment and adherence to traffic control procedures.

Training:

  • Stay informed about new technologies, industry trends, and best practices related to traffic signal systems, and participate in training programs as required.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent. Additional vocational training or certification in electrical or electronics technology is preferred.
  • Must possess an IMSA Level II certification as a minimum, have a valid driver’s license and electrical background is a big plus.
  • Previous experience in traffic signal maintenance, electrical maintenance, or a related field is desirable.
  • Proficiency in troubleshooting electrical and electronic systems, knowledge of traffic signal equipment and components, and familiarity with relevant software for programming and diagnostics.
  • Ability to analyze traffic patterns, interpret technical specifications, and make data-driven decisions to optimize traffic signal performance.
  • Strong communication skills to interact with engineering teams, contractors, and other stakeholders, and the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical personnel.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills to diagnose and resolve issues with traffic signal systems efficiently.
  • Ability to perform tasks that may require lifting heavy equipment, working at heights, and standing for extended periods.
  • A valid driver's license with a clean driving record is often required for this position, as technicians may need to travel to different locations to service traffic signal systems.
